Ruptured Disc Column Resources

Resources

  • Disc Disease
Several factors, including genetic factors and changes in hydration and collagen, are believed to play a role in the development of degenerative disc disease.
  •
  • Sciatica Information
Pain is the most common symptom from sciatica. Often only affecting one side of the lower body, Sciatica back pain extends from the lower back, through the lower back of the thigh and down through the leg.
  •
  • Bone Spurs Information
Most bones spurs may go undetected for years because they cause no signs or symptoms. Some bone spurs form in areas where they can rub against bones or push against nerves causing pain and disability.
  •
  • Bulging Disc Information
A wealth of information about bulging discs, including symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
  •
  • Herniated Disc
Information on herniated discs in relation to ruptured discs
  •

    Treatments

  • Percutaneous Discectomy
A percutaneous arthroscopic laser discectomy is done when the patient's history, physical examination and imaging (such as CT scan or MRI) indicates herniated or bulging disc and the material inside the disc has not ruptured into the spinal canal.
  •
  • Laminotomy
A laminotomy is a surgical procedure that is used to relieve pressure off the spinal canal for the exiting nerve root and spinal cord, increasing the amount of space available for the neural tissue and thus releasing the nerve.
  •
  • Foraminotomy
Foraminotomy is a medical operation used to relieve pressure on nerves that are being compressed by the intervertebral foramen, the space in the vertebra where a nerve root exits the spinal canal
  •
  • Ruptured Disc Surgery
If after six months have passed without any improvement in the patients, surgery for a ruptured disc is often considered to avoid permanent damage to the nerve.
  •
  • Ruptured Disc Exercise
Most doctors will agree that before surgery should be attempted for most back conditions (there are a few exceptions) conventional treatments such as exercises for a ruptured disc
  •

    Symptoms

  • Numbness
As the blood flow is cut from the nerve it stops sending signals giving a numb feeling in the affected area
  •
  • Lower Back Pain
A ruptured disc can cause back pain by affecting the nerves in the lumbar region of the back
  •
  • Tingling Sensations
If you are experiencing tingling sensations in your extremities it could be due to nerve impingement from a ruptured disc
  •
  • Radiating pain
Symptoms of the sciatic nerve been compressed often result in radiating pain starting in the buttocks and traveling down the back of the leg.
  •
  • Muscular Weakness
A ruptured disc impinging a nerve root or the spinal cord may cause muscular weakness in the extremities.
  •

    Causes

  • Sudden movement
A sudden movement such as a violent sneeze or cough can cause a disc in the spine to bulge or rupture.
  •
  • Traumatic Injury
Traumatic injury to the back can place excessive strain on a intervertebral disc causing the inner material to rupture through the tough exterior.
  •
  • Disc Degeneration
As we go through the human aging process the disc in our back can begin to degenerate, making them susceptible to ruptures or herniations.
