Herniated disc symptoms can vary as vastly as the people the condition affects. In addition to severity, the symptoms can differ in their location as well as the combination of sensations they produce. Although the symptoms vary depending on the specifics of your condition, most people experience at least one or a combination of the following:
- Pain
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Muscle weakness or loss of muscle control
- Muscle spasms
- Headaches
The part of the body in which herniated disc symptoms manifest themselves depends on the location of the disc in the spine. Generally, they are categorized as being in one of three areas:
- Cervical – The upper back and neck that includes vertebrae C1–C7. Symptoms of a herniated disc in this region may be felt in the neck, upper back, and arms.
- Thoracic – The middle back that includes vertebrae T1–T12. Herniated discs here are somewhat uncommon due to the support provided to this area of the back by the ribcage. However, they do occur sometimes, and those suffering from a rupture in this area can experience herniated disc symptoms in the mid-back, chest, and torso.
- Lumbar – The lower back that includes vertebrae L1–L5. A herniated disc in the lumbar spine can cause symptoms to manifest in the lower back, buttocks, legs, and feet.
